Disciplinary and grievance
Representing individual members in disciplinary and grievance proceedings is the most important — and most time-consuming — area of work for union reps, according to TUC research.
An online survey that received over 3,800 responses found that almost a quarter of reps spent four hours per week on disciplinaries and grievances.
This area of work was regarded as the most important issue, dealt with by 47% of respondents.
Respondents spent an average 10 hours per week (paid and unpaid) on union activity.
While 86% said they received some facility time, 43% said they did not have enough. And more than three out of four reps said that they used their own time for rep work.
