Rail strikes
Rail union RMT’s long-running dispute over the introduction of driver-only operation on trains escalated last month. Union members at Arriva trains on Northern Rail, Merseyrail and Southern rail services took strike action in their fight to retain safety-critical guards on train services.
The union also confirmed that it was balloting staff across the London Bridge group for strike action and action short of strike. This followed the sacking of a London Underground (LU)member and the disciplining of two others for intervening to stop a serious assault by a fare dodger on fellow staff members, including one who was pregnant.
RMT general secretary Mick Cash called the sacking “one of the most appalling abuses of the LU disciplinary procedure that RMT has ever come across”.
