Renewed teachers’ strike possible in Poland

The main Polish teachers’ union, the ZNP, is set to decide early this month on whether to renew its nationwide strike action which was suspended after 19 days at the end of April.

Since the start of September, the union has been surveying members’ opinion and, depending on the outcome, it will decide what action to propose.

If a strike is planned, a formal ballot is required, which means it cannot begin before the second half of October.

An earlier survey of 7,000 teachers carried out by the inter-schools strike committee found that 41% of teachers thought a new strike was needed.

Teachers are calling for a 30% pay increase this year. They have already received a 5% increase in January and a 9.6% increase in September. They are proposing a 5% increase each month in October, November and December.
