All power to Prospect at Baglan Bay

Professionals and specialists’ union Prospect has reached a recognition agreement with the operators of Baglan Bay power station in South Wales to represent staff as they face a “crucial period” in a TUPE transfer.

The union had few members at the plant until it was announced earlier this year that staff would be transferred from General Electric (GE), the plant operator, to its owner, Calon Energy. At that point there was a “huge spike” in membership, the union said.

When GE approached staff for a representative in consultation meetings, most of the workforce sent letters saying they wished to be represented by Prospect.

As the union’s membership passed through the 50% threshold for automatic recognition under the statutory provision, Prospect approached GE requesting union recognition. What the union called “constructive engagement” from the company’s management team meant a deal could be signed in August, and Calon Energy was informed of the position.
