Visa extensions

Public services union UNISON has welcomed the announcement that health and care workers from overseas, and their families, whose visas are due to expire before 1 October, will have them automatically extended for free.

This applies to staff in the NHS and independent sector and includes their family members.

The government has also confirmed that family members and dependants of healthcare workers who die as result of contracting the coronavirus will be offered indefinite leave to remain.

UNISON, one of the unions that had lobbied for the measure, described it as “a very welcome step forward”.
