MU strikes the right note
The Musicians’ Union (MU) has recorded a bumper year for membership recruitment, with numbers rising by over 5% to 32,055 from 30,319.
The union’s “Join for £1” scheme has attracted over 3,000 new members since its launch in January 2019. The MU says over 90% of these joiners are renewing their membership for 2020.
The union says the success highlights its focus on campaigning, particularly on the free movement of musicians post-Brexit, as well as its Safe Space initiative for those facing harassment, discrimination or abuse at work.
General secretary Horace Trubridge said: “It’s never been easier to join the MU and our impressive sign-up figures reflect that. More importantly, we are retaining more musicians in membership than ever before”.
