Hotels accused of anti-union activity


Workers at two major hotel chains held separate protests last month because of alleged hostility towards their union, Unite. 


Unite accused the Intercontinental Hotel Group (IHG), owners of Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza, of “union avoidance” and “unilateral withdrawal from union access agreements”, among other matters.


The protest came a day after similar action by Unite members outside Premier Inn’s flagship hotel in London’s Leicester Square over owner Whitbread’s alleged attempts to gag staff from speaking to the union. 


Union reps have been told by workers at London sites that the management has instructed them not to talk to the union or discuss trade unions at work.


In a recent survey, the union has been told of similar information coming from workers at other Whitbread-owned chains, including Costa Coffee and Beefeater.
