New investment brings CWU recognition call at Virgin Media
The CWU communications union has called on Virgin Media to recognise it for collective bargaining after the company announced it will be creating 6,000 new jobs.
The union welcomed the announcement, which arises because of a £3 billion investment in broadband rollout. CWU deputy general secretary Andy Kerr said: “We hope that the jobs being created will be permanent direct labour on decent terms and conditions.”
Virgin Media was urged to “draw a line under recent hostilities” — the union was de-recognised in 2012 — and to “enter into positive dialogue with the CWU to help ensure the workforce is properly represented through this period of expansion”.
In January, the union began a campaign to increase its presence in Virgin Media call centres “in response to member feedback”.
