Young members

The CWU communications union is urging young activists in its telecoms and financial services sector to encourage even more of their young colleagues to participate in the union, given their increasing proportion in the workforce.

Addressing the latest quarterly forum for young CWU activists, the union’s deputy general secretary Andy Kerr noted the rising proportions of under-30s in the areas it operates in.

He said 30% of employees at BT’s Openreach, at least 50% at BT’s Consumer retail division and a growing number at Santander bank are under the age of 30.

He stressed the importance of recognising the different concerns of workers at opposite ends of the age demographic. It is “crucial … that we really understand what young members want the CWU to do for them,” he said. “And once we understand that I need to know what people like you can do to help us to achieve it.”
