Motor deals in Spain

Two recent settlements at car plants in Spain are signs of the limited recovery that the economy is experiencing.

At the Nissan plants in Barcelona, local union representatives have agreed to extend the existing agreement which provides that pay will increase by 0.8% in 2015, with a further 0.2% increase in 2016. This implies a real terms increase as prices were 0.3% lower in November 2015 than they had been a year before.

Nissan employs some 5,500 people in total in Spain.

The new four-year agreement at the Peugeot Citroën plant in Vigo in the north west of Spain, which runs from January 2016 until December 2019, does not provide any percentage increase in salaries. However, there is an additional annual lump sum worth up to 2% of total annual pay, if the group in Spain and Portugal achieves its financial objectives. This is in addition to the existing 1.5% payment linked to performance at the Vigo plant. This Vigo-specific bonus produced a lump sum payment worth €250 in 2015.
