Deliveroo

A union representing couriers working for Deliveroo, the app-based takeaway delivery firm, has lodged a recognition claim with the Central Arbitration Committee (CAC).

In November, Deliveroo rejected a voluntary recognition request from the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB) to collectively bargain on behalf of riders in Camden, London. The union then proceeded to take its case through the statutory procedure.

IWGB general secretary Jason Moyer-Lee said: “Of course, for the CAC to entertain our request they will need to decide that Deliveroo drivers are ‘workers’,” rather than ‘independent contractors’ as described by the company.” (See also pages 16-18.)

The move followed an employment tribunal ruling that a group of drivers for the Uber app-based cab firm should be classed as workers.
