Solidarnosc shipyard may close

The shipyard in Gdansk, Poland, which was the birthplace of the Solidarnosc union in 1980, faces closure unless its owners come forward with new financing.

The yard is now 75% owned by a Ukrainian company and employment has been cut to 1,800, compared with 3,000 in 2006 and more than 15,000 in the 1980s.

The government says it cannot provide further support without a financial commitment from the owners.
