Leadership change for airline pilots

Airline pilots’ union BALPA will have a new general secretary from 1 June, when Brian Strutton takes over from Jim McAuslan who is standing down after 13 years’ service with the union. Strutton comes to BALPA from the GMB general union where he has most recently held the post of national secretary for the private commercial services sector, covering a wide range of industries including retail, security, distribution and energy.

Meanwhile, Mick Whelan has been re-elected unopposed as general secretary of train drivers’ union ASLEF and will commence his second five-year term in November.

National Union of Journalists’ general secretary Michelle Stanistreet has said she will be standing again in the union’s forthcoming leadership election. Applications for the post close on 12 April.

In construction union UCATT, the executive committee is currently considering the timetable for a general secretary election. Previous incumbent Steve Murphy resigned last September after being on sick leave for six months and, since then, the post has been filled by acting general secretary Brian Rye.

Paul Nowak has been appointed deputy general secretary of the TUC. Since 2013, he has held one of the two assistant general secretary posts, alongside Kay Carberry, who has recently retired.
