Government U-turn on safety appointment
TUC head of health and safety Hugh Robertson has welcomed the government’s U-turn over the appointment of an employer to represent workers’ interests on the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) board (see Workplace Report, September 2016, page14).
He reported on the Stronger Unions blog that following a meeting with TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady, work and pensions secretary Damien Green said that he would be advertising a new seat for a workers’ representative on the board and will “welcome the active engagement” of the TUC.
“This represents a complete reversal and is a result of the fantastic campaigning that unions and others have done,” said Robertson. But he warned that the original move showed that the government does not understand the importance of unions, or worker involvement.
