Political fund

The previous coalition government’s lobbying Act may have had an unintended consequence — encouraging unions who have no political fund to set one up. The Society of Radiographers (SoR) is to ballot its members to ask if they want to set up a political fund for the first time in its nearly 100-year history.

The union’s UK Council views the establishment of a fund specifically to finance political activity as a defensive act against the lobbying Act, which gives a greater role to auditors in ensuring union resources are specifically identified as being for campaigning activities.

The 26,500-member SoR, which represents cancer treatment specialists and is affiliated to the TUC, will ballot members later this year.
