Plans for grandparental leave put on hold

Government plans to introduce grandparental leave this year have been deferred.

The legislation which would have extended statutory shared parental leave (SPL) to grandparents was first proposed in 2015, although a consultation on it, planned for early 2016, was delayed until after the Brexit referendum and, to date, has not taken place.

Now, the plans have been temporarily put to one side, People Management magazine has reported, while the government carries out an evaluation of SPL policy in general, with the findings due to be published early next year.

The government has previously said that up to two million people had adjusted their working lives to provide childcare for their grandchildren.
