Regulations providing an important step towards ensuring that seafarers have equal employment rights to land workers came into force on 13 April 2018. 

The Seafarers (Insolvency, Collective Redundancies and Information Consultation Miscellaneous Amendments) Regulations 2018 SI 2018/407 remove the exemption of share fishermen from protection against redundancy and employer insolvency under Parts XI and XII of the Employment Rights Act 1996. Merchant Seafarers will also no longer be excluded from Part XII protection.
