Hillsborough police chief’s trial begins

The trial of match commander on the day of the Hillsborough disaster, David Duckenfield, has begun at Preston Crown Court. Duckenfield denies the charge of manslaughter by gross negligence.

The former Sheffield Wednesday club secretary and safety officer at the time of the disaster, Graham Mackrell, is standing trial alongside him. He is charged with offences under the Safety of Sports Grounds Act 1975 and the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.

It is almost 30 years since 96 Liverpool fans were crushed to death at the 1989 FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Sheffield Wednesday’s ground.
