Sellafield strike secures deal
Construction workers involved in strike action at the nuclear decommissioning and renewal project at Sellafield say they have secured a ground-breaking deal to end their health and safety and productivity dispute.
The Unite general union says the deal saw Sellafield Ltd and 14 on-site sub-contractor companies “drop their refusal to facilitate a senior shop steward to deal with health and safety, workplace welfare and training issues”.
The agreement also sees the formation of a health and safety committee covering all the contractors on the site, and followed a campaign of industrial action, including walkouts and action short of a strike.
“The creation of a new senior shop steward on maximum facility time at Sellafield will help make the site safer, reduce accidents and enable workforce issues to be dealt with speedily,” said Unite’s regional secretary for the North West, Mick Whiteley.
