Rise in number of workers on zero-hours contracts

The number of people saying they work on a zero-hours basis has increased by a fifth.

According to the latest estimate from the Office for National Statistics 903,000 of the employed UK workforce said they were on a zero-hours contract in April to June 2016, against 747,000 for the same period in 2015 – a increase of 20.9% or 156,000 employees. The rise may in part, be due to the greater awareness and recognition of the term “zero hours contract”.

Almost two-thirds (65%) of people on zero-hours contracts reported that they worked part-time, compared with 26% of other workers. And around one-third (31%) would like to work more hours.
