Union recognition applications
The number of applications for union recognition at the Central Arbitration Committee (CAC) passed the 1,000 mark in March this year — 17 years after the establishment of the statutory recognition system. In that time recognition has been awarded in 293 cases (29%), including 144 where a ballot was not required.
By the end of March 2017 the organisation had received 1,006 recognition applications, of which 51 came in the last year. This compares with 48 in the previous year and 38 two years ago.
According to outgoing chair Sir Michael Burton: “Progress ... remains relatively consistent, with the slight increases in the last few years.”
