Report all dog attacks


The CWU communications workers’ union used the annual Dog Awareness Week last month to urge its members to report all dog attacks. 


In its fifth year, it takes place in June because statistics show that attacks on postal workers increase during the summer months, particularly during the holiday period when the average number of attacks increases by 10%. The week aims to raise awareness among CWU members, dog owners and the wider public of the action they can take to prevent these attacks. 


“Don’t take risks, report all attacks and keep your walk logs up to date” are the key messages of the initiative, which is jointly run by Royal Mail and the CWU. 


The CWU estimates that around 1,000 dog attacks go unreported each year so a more realistic annual figure for attacks is around 3,000. It says seven postmen and women are attacked by dogs across the UK every day.
