Disabled workers


The government is “years behind schedule” in delivering its manifesto commitment to halve the employment gap between disabled and non-disabled people by 2020, says research from the TUC.


Ministers have pledged to reach this milestone — which would mean having nearly two-thirds (63%) of disabled people in work — by the end of the decade.


However, the TUC analysis, Disability and employment, shows that at current rates of progress it will take until 2030 to achieve this target.


According to the findings, by 2020, just over half (52%) of disabled people will be in work — 11% less than the government promised.


The TUC says attempts to get more disabled people into work have been undermined by cuts to the Employment and Support Allowance for disabled people and the scaling back of programmes like Access to Work.
