Victimised reps

Members of the NUJ journalists’ union at the Rotherham Advertiser last month called off their strike when management changed its mind over making their chief union rep, Phil Turner, redundant. The company announced in March that it wanted to make one journalist redundant, and singled out Turner.

After a campaign for his re-instatement, management rescinded its decision on appeal.

Meanwhile, Candy Udwin, the PCS civil service union rep suspended during the dispute over privatisation of the National Gallery, has won the first round of her battle for her re-instatement.

She was sacked after sharing information with her full-time union official about the cost of the gallery using a private company.

An interim employment tribunal hearing found it was likely a full tribunal would rule that the information-sharing was legitimate in her role as a union rep.
