Couriers
Couriers working for UberEats and Deliveroo in Glasgow have formed a “network”, backed by independent union Industrial Workers of the World (IWW).
Couriers Network Scotland has been set up by precarious workers in the gig economy to improve their working conditions.
The network is self-organising, but is being supported by IWW Scotland. Couriers do not have to be a member to take part.
The aim of the network is to work collectively to win better pay, rights and health and safety. This is centred round three main demands: a guaranteed minimum wage, despite often being classed by courier firms as “self-employed”; payment for time spent waiting for deliveries or travelling to pick up a delivery; and free access to equipment, such as lights and high-vis clothing, to make the job safer.
