Too many dog attacks

The latest statistics on dog attacks show that while there has been a 10% reduction in the number of incidents, there were still 2,600 reported attacks over the past year – a figure communication workers’ union CWU says is unacceptably high and represents attacks on seven postmen and women a day.

At the start of the fourth annual Royal Mail Dog Awareness Week earlier this month, the union said that, while many years of campaigning were having a positive effect, it wanted to keep driving the figures down. It says that new dog control laws now identify and penalise “chronically irresponsible” dog owners. The union highlighted a recent case in which a dog owner was fined £8,800 after his dog injured a postal delivery worker.
