Cleaners allege safety violations at hospital

Outsourced migrant workers from the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) who clean at London Bridge Hospital are alleging bullying and serious health and safety violations as part of a campaign for fair pay and equality.

The cleaners, who are employed by Compass Group and the private hospital, say they have been instructed to clean Covid wards without adequate training, prior warning of contamination risk, PPE, or uniforms. The add that they are given no time to wash before going on to cleaning wards with other patients and that several of them contracted Covid and were forced to isolate without pay.

They are demanding that London Bridge Hospital immediately addresses their health and safety concerns, ends a culture of bullying and overwork, and pays £12.50 an hour, with the same terms and conditions as directly-employed staff.
