Stress and mental health at work - a guide for trade unions and working people (May 2022)

Chapter 1

What are the symptoms of stress?

[ch 1: page 10]

Online HSE advice says signs of stress in a worker include changes in the way they act. They may take more time off, arrive for work later, become “twitchy” or nervous, or change the way they think or feel. They may have mood swings; become withdrawn; lose motivation, commitment and confidence; or experience increased emotional reactions such as being more tearful, sensitive or aggressive than in the past.

Signs of stress in a team include arguments between team members, higher staff turnover, more reports of stress, more sickness absence, decreased performance, and an increase in complaints and grievances.
