New political fund

Members of the NUT teaching union have voted in favour of establishing a political fund. The majority was large but the turnout was only 13.3%.

General secretary Steve Sinnott said the fund would “enable the NUT to campaign more effectively against those who stand on racist or fascist platforms during periods of national or local elections”.

The NUT will become the third teaching union, along with the NASUWT and the EIS, to establish a fund.

Votes in favour 31,704 (73.7%)
Votes against 11,310 (26.3%)
Turnout (valid voting papers only) 13.3%
