TSSA retirement and possible merger

Gerry Doherty, general secretary of the TSSA transport staff union, is to retire early from the union after eight years at the helm. He will depart in November, leaving his successor to develop the newly agreed relationship with sister transport union the RMT.

The TSSA and RMT have committed to formal talks which could ultimately lead to a merger of the two unions. Initial discussions will focus on closer working through a federation structure, with a view to moving towards a merger.
