Stanistreet re-elected

The NUJ journalists’ union has re-elected Michelle Stanistreet as general secretary after her candidacy was unopposed.

Her second term begins with an upturn in financial fortunes for the union after a major effort to get its problematic finances under control. Its recent delegate conference was told that its latest financial year ended with the union showing net assets of £2 million. The following two months had seen that rise to £2.4 million and a budget surplus of £120,000 compared to the forecast £21,000.

NUJ honorary general treasurer John Barsby warned, however, that although the union was seeing around 200 new joiners every month, members were being lost overall because of redundancies.

The conference agreed to switch to a subscription system based on members’ earnings rather than on what sector they work in.
