Call for robotics law

The legal affairs committee of the European Parliament has approved a report calling for European legislation to regulate developments in the area of robotics.

As well as setting ethical rules governing the use of robots and artificial intelligence, the proposed legislation would also deal with issues such as who has liability in accidents involving self-driving cars. The report, which raised the potential employment impact of large-scale use of new digital technology, will be discussed by the whole parliament later this month.

If an absolute majority approves it, the European Commission must either present legislation on the subject or set out its reasons for not doing so.
