Union finances rosy

Trade union finances improved overall in the latest reporting period, according to figures collated by the union watchdog, the Certification Officer (CO).

Gross income totalled £1.29 billion, an increase of 4.8% on the previous year rise, while gross expenditure fell by 10.6% to £1.09 billion.

Total funds at the end of the period rose by 42.0% to £1.52 billion, though the scale of this change partly reflected a change in accounting standards.

The figures, set out in the CO’s annual report for 2016-17, are for all 138 unions listed by the CO, including non-TUC unions.
