Inflation woes

The annual rate of inflation under the Retail Prices Index (RPI) increased to 3.6% from 3.5% the previous month. Dearer food and furniture helped fuel the rise.

The 3.6% figure promises more misery for rail users from January 2018 as the July rate is used to set regulated rail fares.

Inflation under the government’s preferred measure — Consumer Prices Index Housing (CPIH) — was unchanged at 2.6%.
