Car job losses

The takeover of Opel and Vauxhall by the French car company PSA has led to the first job losses.

The acquisition of European operations of the US vehicle group General Motors, which caused concern among unions earlier in the year (see Labour Research, March 2017, page 8), was formally completed on 1 August and the loss of 400 jobs at the Ellesmere Port plant in Merseyside was announced last month.

However, this is unlikely to be the end of the story, as Opel has been given just over three months to draw up a plan for a return to profits.
