Union growth

Public services union UNISON says workers are joining the union in record numbers as they seek support and security during the coronavirus crisis. It said some 62,000 new members joined in the three months to 20 April, and that net membership had grown by almost 16,000 since the beginning of the year.

UNISON general secretary Dave Prentis said: “People are joining the union for advice and security at this worrying time.”

Meanwhile, preliminary results of a major survey of union reps across industries (see page 4) suggest that many workplaces are seeing workers joining unions during the pandemic. The first batch of 468 reps responding revealed that 30% had seen a membership increase, while less than 3% had seen a decline.
