Organising in the private sector

Delegates at last month’s TUC Congress called on the General Council to take further steps to foster union organisation in the private sector.

The move followed the 2020 signing, by all TUC unions, of a TUC Organising Pledge, which set out six strategic actions to increase unionisation, including raising membership among workers aged under 30.

This time delegates asked the TUC to go further by establishing a “concentrated, focused, digital marketing campaign specifically aimed at 16- to 24-year-olds in the private sector”.

The resolution, proposed by the Aegis finance union, also called for a dedicated TUC budget and resource to support and work with affiliates to help achieve increased membership in the private sector.
