TSSA merger

The TSSA transport and travel union has entered merger talks with the US International Brotherhood of Boilermakers (IBB) union, following endorsement of the plans by its delegate conference. The two unions struck up a “strategic partnership” in 2020 and are now looking to formalise those links into a full merger.

TSSA general secretary Manuel Cortes said: “The aim is to deliver an autonomous British and Irish section composed of current TSSA members.

“We can build on our shared values and take forward a new and exciting model of trade union organising for our members on both sides of the pond.”

If the talks are successful, the TSSA would become an autonomous British and Irish section within the IBB and would form part of a new IBB Railroad, Transport and Travel Sector. It would be known as “The District” and would have delegated authority for all industrial, policy and political decisions.
