Unions report rise in membership

The latest issue of Building Worker, the magazine of construction union UCATT, reports a 10% rise in membership during 1999. At the end of 1999 membership stood at 122,579, 12,000 higher than 1998. The union's finances have also improved and general secretary George Brumwell said "UCATT is in fine shape financially and with the extra membership growth we are making more and more of an impact in the construction industry."AMO, the union representing magistrates' court staff, met in conference last month and reported a 7% rise in membership of the year with its 6,650 members now accounting for nearly three quarters of all magistrates' court staff in England and Wales.
