Union steps up asbestos campaign

The GMB general union has launched the next phase of its "Asbestos: it's still a killer" initiative.

One of the union's key aims is to raise awareness to help prevent exposure to asbestos now and in the future. As part of the campaign the GMB has produced a folder containing posters and an illustrated booklet showing asbestos in 19 common workplace situations. The booklet should help safety reps determine whether asbestos may be present.

The GMB is now concentrating its efforts on ensuring compliance with the proposed new duty to manage asbestos in buildings.

Following an initial consultation last year, a second consultative document has just been launched by the Health and Safety Commission. The main change is to widen the definition of the duty

holder to include those who legally have maintenance and repair responsibilities, for any part of the building in addition to the employer in occupation of the premises.
