Inflation steady

Dearer mortgages, offset by cheaper food items, kept inflation steady in July. The annual rate of inflation as measured by the Retail Price Index (RPI) was 3.0%, the same figure as June.

The Consumer Price Index measure of inflation, which excludes housing costs, was down to 1.4% from 1.6% the previous month. Cheaper furniture was the main contribution to the fall.
