Guidance on avoiding age discrimination

A national "Be Ready!" campaign has been launched to help employers prepare for new age discrimination legislation in October 2006.

The Age Partnership Group (APG) - which includes the TUC alongside a variety of employers' organisations, government departments and other bodies - has mailed over 1.4 million newsletters to employers, outlining best practice and highlighting the business benefits of employing older workers.

"The new legislation means employers will no longer be able to selectively recruit, train, promote or retire people simply on the basis of their age," an APG spokesperson said. "However, we're confident that employers will naturally see the benefits of an age-diverse workforce before they are forced to."

Employers and union reps can also get a free "personnel organiser" and CD-ROM full of advice, case studies and sources of help. For these or a copy of the newsletter, call 0845 715 2000 or e-mail [email protected]
