HSE loses responsibility for regulating rail safety

The responsibility for railway health and safety regulation transferred from the Health and Safety Commission and the Health and Safety Executive to the Office of Rail Regulation on 1 April 2006.

Unions are unhappy with the switch, first proposed in 2004 (see Workplace Report, September 2004). They argue that safety standards will suffer.
