Journalists agree payout for late shifts

Members of the NUJ journalists' union at the Bolton Evening News have agreed to accept annual payments of £500 to £1,000, depending on job type, in return for working until 11.30pm.

The new working pattern, brought in to enable the newspaper to print overnight, replaced a system where staff received £10 for every shift worked beyond 9pm. An earlier proposal for new shift payments had prompted staff to threaten industrial action.
