Miners' vibration payouts top £480m

The government has announced it has paid over £480 million to miners for Vibration White Finger (VWF) injuries. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is currently running two major compensation schemes for miners suffering from lung and certain vibration-related diseases - vibration white finger and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). The schemes were negotiated between the DTI and representatives of miners' solicitors following court judgements in1997-98 which found British Coal liable for the injuries. Those who feel they may have a claim for compensation for lung diseases caused by coal dust and wish to check how to make a claim can call the helpline: 0800 0282138.
