Health & safety - HSE Monitor

Safe winter work advice

THE Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has offered some guidance to ensure workers remain safe during the colder, darker months ahead.

Peter Black, principal inspector of construction at the HSE, said: “Cold weather and shorter periods of daylight mean there is more potential for accidents to happen. With a little planning, and common sense, these can be avoided.”

HSE emphasised that firms have a responsibility for those working outdoors to provide adequate welfare facilities, such as ensuring that water supplies do not freeze and gas heaters have adequate ventilation.
