Employers “treading on thin ice” over slips

The cold snap has prompted public services union UNISON to warn organisations that “they are treading on thin ice” if they fail to take extra measures to prevent slips and trips.

The union says that thousands of people have suffered broken bones and other injuries from falls on snow and ice, and employers could find themselves hit hard financially if they fail to take action.

Victoria Roberts from the trade union solicitors Thompsons commented: “During cold weather, pavements and pathways become treacherous. Occupiers have a duty to ensure that any pathways leading to buildings are clear and safe. Employers should have an adequate system for winter maintenance in place.”
