TUC guidance on the effect of the cuts on women

The TUC has issued a leaflet aimed at reps, giving the key facts and arguments about why women are bearing the brunt of the government’s cuts programme.

The leaflet details how the £18 billion of cuts to social security and welfare and hundreds of thousands of job losses in the public sector will hit women and families hard with pregnant women, women pensioners and single mothers most vulnerable of all. It warns that women will pay for 72% of the changes in taxes, benefits and tax credits set out in the budget.

It also outlines various courses of action including putting the gender impact of the cuts on the agenda at union branch meetings, asking for union help in getting local press interest in stories, getting involved in local campaigns and writing to local MPs.
