Paltry fine for burns

Molten material sprayed from the back of one of JVM Castings (Worcester) Ltd’s die cast machines onto a worker. The metal (heated to 650oC) burnt through his clothes causing him to suffer serious burns.

An HSE investigation found that the rear of the machine was unguarded and that Asim Qureshi’s overalls and eye protection did not adequately protect him. Although this was the third such incident, the company was only fined £6,000 with costs.
