Recognition for green union projects

Union-supported environmental projects have won prestigious Green Gown awards this month. The awards recognise exceptional sustainability initiatives being undertaken in the tertiary education sector (further and higher education and adult learning).

South Thames College won the Best Newcomer award for its Greener Jobs Alliance (GJA) initiative. The Tooting-based project is funded by Battersea and Wandsworth Trades Union Council and involves the UCU college lecturers’ union, as well as local employers and green campaign groups and is built around a community-engagement strategy. The project has introduced a range of energy efficiency, renewable energy and environmental awareness initiatives and provided work experience opportunities for students at the college. These include carrying out energy assessment visits to local households and installing solar PV panels.
